Hi folks, I had to take a leaf out of my otherwise busy schedule coz a ‘yaar’ of mine was getting engaged to his heartthrob. After forgoing a day’s pay and some sleep coz the driver was pretty rash (I took his number though, could use him as a dupe) and he had me thinking about various ROAD movies. The first thing that stuck me is ‘Gamyam’- a well executed screenplay I should say. Though, I was a bit miffed that it has been hugely inspired by the Spanish flick ‘Motorcycle Diaries’. Inspirations and Adaptations are birth rights of creative people; I heard some filmmaker remark over a glass of bitter. Sometimes bitter is sweet enough when adaptations are well executed. Ghajini inspired from ‘memento’ is an example. I had to come out of my dreaming coz our bumper just missed a guy running haplessly on the road. I just turned in my seat and looked at the happily sleeping friend next to me. Well, probably his last dream coz the next day onwards he will be marred by night mares. Now my mind started wandering thinking out Amalgamations of the male and female through a bond called ‘marriage’. Many flicks with marriage as the central plot has the audiences hooked over the times. HAHK is one classic example. Wish all marriages were so colorful. Moving on from marriages between people and landing our thought process on marriages between movies- What? I know you are screaming at this weird phrase. Well chaps, trust me, this happens all the time- Ghajini I should say falls under this category. A Spanish movie gets married to a 1969 Manoj Kumar starrer Sajan and a south Indian Blockbuster is produced. Although I should add that it even has a French spice thrown in, truly a movie of the world. Somebody once said the world is a small village. Ghajini I should say gives credence to that statement. Anyways I am an ardent fan of Murugodas’ vision. Only a director who loves Cinema immensely can ever dream of executing such a complicated screenplay in such simpler form. Thank God for making memory rules. Abide and cash in. I hope this driver loses his memory or his driving may make his passengers lose their memory. My friend though is getting into his memories by now. Sweet or bitter- got to wait and watch. In your memory always Prashanth Sagar Atluri
